Revelation!

I had a thought yesterday!  The kind that forced steam out of my ears.  Growing up as a FOB, many of the things that happened during my first few years in America didn't make much sense.  In those moments you quickly learn to laugh with the group and assimilate.  Often times it wasn't until years later that I would actually get "it".  Such is the story of ... Green = Horny.  O.o <---  See Illamasqua - Kink in that post.

As a recap if you didn't click on that post: "... in high school when someone wore green, did you guys used to say they were horny? ..."  The sexual undertones were clear, but where did the euphemism come from?!

Finally, some 15 years later I had my 'Aha!' moment ... Thank you Horny Toad!

Toads have warts or horns.  Toads are frogs.  Frogs are green.  Thus Green = Horny.  Ah yes, juvenile humor at its finest.

To celebrate my growth, I though I would show you some greens I really enjoy, which is kind of perfect considering St. Patties day is approaching.  Yay!

First, one more picture of a frog because he is such a beautiful behemoth.

Today I will show you a few of my Rimmel treasures and one from that whoe Sally.

Rimmel - Green with Envy

Rimmel - Green with Envy

Blue, Green

A blue/green duochrome!

If Pure Ice - Heartbreaker had an opaque baby, I would imagine it would resemble this beauty.

Pure Ice - Heartbreaker is similar to NYC - Empire State Blue.  See this post.

Really something.  The pictures speak for themselves!

Rimmel - Camouflage
Rimmel - Camouflage
Warm light.

Love love love the golden glow.
Maybe, just maybe we can call it a duochrome?

Rimmel - Rags to Riches
Much more golden under warm light!

Sally Hansen - Emerald City

Stop. Backup. Yea, emerald is perfect.

I found it at the Dollar Store for ... wait for it ... a dollar.

I have more, many more.  I will show them as St. Patrick's Day approaches! :D

Do you plan to sport green on the 17th this year?  I didn't feel like it last year, but I think I have one picked out for this year.

  1. Yay! *high fives you for being a FOB too*

I was in the same boat as you, figuratively speaking (or maybe even literally, where did you boat take you from and to?) and I do recall some jokes going over my head because of the language barrier and culture differences. I can't say that I've had any 'aha' moments years later though, so you're on your own there :P

  3. I love the green polishes, however I think the frogs are super cute and want to pay more attention to them. XD I never knew green meant horny though... and I am American. >.< *Begins to ask people about it*

  4. I read your High School post. Made me shed a tear. I used to do the same thing with my teeth as I really wanted braces, only I used aluminium foil and those little plasctic covered metal things used for closing sandwich bags! It used to drive my parents crazy. I actually really could have used braces and when I finally went to see an orthodontist and we took all the measurements, she died a few weeks later. My mother decided that it was destiny and that I wasn't going to have braces! Must have been tough the first years in the states. I felt sort of the same way when I was taken out of an English school and put in a Swiss one. I didn't even speak the language and had to stay late every day to catch-up and learn French. I hated it and everyone made fun of me, the "petite américaine" who had Cyndi Lauper's haircut and was dressed like Prince.
Oh, forgot to say that the CERN is 5 minutes away from my place!

I know exactly how you must have felt! ... tee hee cyndi lauper was cool, I don't care what anyone says. And Prince was the shizzzz. I would have been your friend for sure!!

OMG wow, you live so close to an amazing place that does ground breaking science. Kinda jealous :)

  5. I thought it came from the HS urban legend that eating green M&Ms made you horny. That's why the green M&M character on the commercials is "sexy."
    At any rate, beautiful pictures!

  6. Haha, I never knew that green-horny came from toads! I love all these green shades you showed, looking forward to st. patricks day!

  8. These greens are to die for, especially Emerald City and Camouflage (even if it seems a staining one :-P) About braces...I never got to comment on FOB post, even if I read it. When I was a teenager I desperately wanted braces to fix my crooked rabbit teeth but WTH they were quite expensive here and my parents decided that my smile was not a priority (to my mother my wonky teeth were "cute"). So after years smiling with my mouth shut in pictures, two years ago (being 34) I decided I've had enough of it (and had also the money to afford them) so now I wear upper&lower braces (quite a PITA sometimes, actually I wish I didn't needed them :D).

  9. Um in high school for me it was eating green M&Ms meant you were horny! Love green polish!!! That emerald is stunning!

  10. Hahaha, I remember that post! If you ate the green M&M 's in HS, you were almost the equivalent of trash...kids/adults can be so cruel. You look Splendiferous in the dark greens!!

  12. I was born here and I still never got those jokes. I didn't even understand that the best course of action was just to pretend to get it. Everyone would laugh, and then I'd just be standing there all confused looking. No wonder I had no friends up until high school LOL.

Rags to Riches is so beautiful.

  13. I'm doing green from March 1-17! There are too many awesome green polishes to even fit into that time.

I never heard the green = horny jokes until I was an adult. I'm still confused by it.

  15. At age 55, I tend to stick to the (dare I say it..?) "Old Fashioned" colors like reds, mauves, pinks and such. Green is a BIG step outside the "nail polish box" for me, but I just might give this some serious consideration... these greens are amazing! Oh, I feel old.....!

  16. Hey there Loodie. I discovered your blog, and the world of nail blogs generally, about a month ago. I love the sciencie, nerdy stuff - you're incredibly informative. Have read from start to end and am now addicted. xx

  17. Another vote that green=horny was referring to M&Ms.

  18. Ooohh, thank you for reminding me about Camoflage - I have it somewhere around here and I was thinking I'd have to buy a new green polish for Paddy's Day, but nope :)

As for horny toads...I am NOT an FOB but I never really made the connection, so there! I'm worse off than you could ever imagine being! LOL
