Top as base adventure ...

You can also substitute the word 'fail' for adventure.

Color Club usually comes out with a seven pack assortment of their seasonal collection, seven colors or six colors and one clear.

They are terrific bargains (especially when I find them at Ross for $7.99!!) with only one down side. The bottles are unlabeled. I've bought several and usually just search swatches and label them myself.

I guess I was not really paying attention and just assumed the bottle of clear was just that.

I often use clear as a base or top coat, so I didn't think twice with this Color Club. Although I'm showing Sally Hansen products, I have and use many others indiscriminately.

One mani (actually several now) I decided to use the Color Club "clear" as a basecoat. The result each and every time was...

The first time this happen I was all like, "wow that sucks." Then every subsequent time after I started thinking the worst of Color Club. Why in the world does every single polish I put over this "base" not sticking?! It didn't matter what top coat I used or whether I wrapped the tips or not.

This is/was Revlon - Tropical Temptation ... pre scabies.

This was all too coincidental and Color Club can't suck this much. Then it hit me! This must be a quick dry topcoat!

Indeed formula matters. More reason for me to finish the following series... *link*

Lesson learned: the Color Club clear in the variety packs is not a base coat.

I would imagine anyone who has used Seche Vite as a base coat has experienced something similar.  I mean after all Seche Vite has been known to cause glitters to spontaneously pop off!

Seche Vite also creates waving topcoat flaps ... see here.

Anyone want to  buy these nail strips?

Anyone, anyone? .... Eww, I'm just kidding.

  1. I dunno, I'd buy your "nail strips"...they're probably easier to trim than the SH ones :P

  5. I HATE how they don't label them. I love the Color club fast dry topcoat, it's one of my favorites but I never know what I'm going to get. The last set I bought just had a regular old clear top coat.

    1. I'll have to actually use it as a topcoat next time and hopefully it will be much better.

  6. I find this popping off the nail whole pretty cool for some reason. It's never happened to me and my nails generally repel polish... I feel a little jipped.

    1. LOL. Kay so, try putting on 4 layers of random glitter, then SV the hell out of it every day for 3 days straight. I hope this makes your dreams come true.

    2. That does it for me every time. Makes polish removal a lot easier. I usually put a new color coat and SV coat on every other day, after a week, pop!

  7. I had this once with Seche Vite and then learnt that it doesn't work as a base coat. I only used it because I forgot to bring my base coat to my boyfriend's house and had to make do... lesson learnt!

    1. Completely understandable. I would totally do it again on purpose though. At least it gives me good reason to change my polish in 1 day or less :P

  8. I also think this is cool! Could you reattach them like strips?

    1. If I was so inclined. perhaps I could glue them. Oh, this might be a good nail fix ... ooo the possibilities!

  9. LOL!! Never experienced that polish peeling (sometimes I used a matte top coat as a base, anyway)!

    1. I've heard good things about matte topcoats as bases!

  10. Haha you've certainly provided an alternative to swatching on nail wheels.

  11. It is so odd, I never have that happen. I don't know what it could be, but it's a rare occasion when I get it peeling off.
Once I had some glitter on for ages and a portion lifted, but remained on, even partially cracked...ok that was odd.

    Odd.

    1. I have had glitters pop off spontaneously, while others I had to coerced. Maybe it just depends on how pissed the glitter is at your nail bed lol.

  12. Actually, I try to check each collection online beforehand to see if it included a base or top coat. In some cases (there was a set of pink-ish sheers), the bottle actually was meant to be base coat. I know the ones with the neons and poptastic are supposed to be top coats. Their boho collections (2 sets) came with both - one with base, the other with top, lolol!

  13. I kind of like it when the whole nail comes off like that, just it's not good when you are somewhere out, it makes removing nail polish really easy :D

    1. LOL, exactly. Recently, I was forced to walk around with no polish on my middle finger. I was secretly giving everyone THE finger lololol.

  14. I love those color club packs, I hate that they don't label them. The worst though was the mini combo with top/base/vita base/oil. I kept having to smell the top and the oil to tell the diff before I remembered to label them. lol. I love your blog! So much great info. I've got bad peeling and since reading your blog I'm now moisturizing like a maniac! Aaaand slapping myself for neglecting my nails. I'm also glad to find someone else who's hair does that single ringlet thing! bahaha :-D

    1. lolol, So basically what you are saying is that it is Color Clubs fault that you are high on polish LOL.

  15. Before I knew how to use Seche correctly, I would have my polish fall off in one whole sheet within 24 hrs. Just like you showed here. Ever since i figured out what I was doing wrong-it's been better. Are you sure you just didn't pick off that polish cause you were feeling lazy for remover? HAHAH And yes it is gross!

    1. LOL. Silly Fingers.

*hangs head in shame* I am a lazy bum. I did pick off a few, but the initial ones popped off, I swear! lol. I'm just glad I didn't damage my nail plate.

  16. Man, that happens to me with almost every manicure! I always just put more basecoat underneath and pop 'em back on, lol. Surprisingly, that makes it hold for a few more days. Maybe I'm just not applying enough initially. Hmm.

    1. lol, awwww. Hey man, at least you make it work.

Oh, quick thought, are you removing oils, lotions, etc, before you apply nail polish? These can mess with polish adhering to the nail plate. Maybe try swiping the nail bed with pure acetone or 99% isopropyl alcohol before your first coat?

  17. I wish they wouldn't put out unlabeled bottles like that--this is exactly the kind of problems people run into because of it! Then again, it resulted in a really fun post to read, so I won't complain too hard this time. ;)

  18. Loodieloodie! God I love your blog, you're unique in your scientific approach and also you are really funny!
Now, my question to you is: what base coat should I use for my super flexible nails? I always get cracks in my manicure after a day or two, or, it peels off in big chunks like a sticker.
Please! Base coat for already flexible nails?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, Please help those of us with very flexible nails. I have this same issue as mentioned by Marie - nail peeling off like a sticker!

I've tried sticky base coats and ridge filler ones. I also think the top coats may be too hard??
